Since the end of May 2021, the new district office has been located in Harmoniepark. This is a great opportunity to learn more about the history of this neighbourhood, formerly known as the “German quarter”.

Although it was not the largest foreign community, the ‘German colony’ in Antwerp was undoubtedly the most visible around 1900.
It was from 1863 onwards, with the abolition of customs duties on the Scheldt, supported at international level, that the largest influx was recorded.
German families not only settled in Antwerp, but nowhere else was integration into Belgian life as strong as here.
The families integrated into cultural life, promoted sport through new infrastructure and were heavily involved in charitable work.
In Antwerp, a German could flourish in all areas of their own culture.
Wealthy merchants and entrepreneurs were the driving force behind this network.
This guided tour tells the story of these wealthy families who settled around the Harmony Park.
As part of German Language Week, this guided tour is accompanied by a German-speaking guide.
