Just in time for German Week, the Antwerp Tourist Office (TOPA) is now offering audio walks in several languages, including German, under the title ‘Flemish Masters from the Shadows’. The aim is to familiarise tourists with Antwerp’s rich art history. The focus is on the painters Peter Paul Rubens, Anthony van Dyck and Jacques Jordaens, whose lives and work are brought to life with the help of a lively audio guide.
The walking maps with instructions and QR codes can be found at various locations in the city, for example in the Cathedral of Our Lady or St James’ Church. An activity booklet is also available for children to involve them in the magical world of Rubens and Co. The map can also be downloaded online via the website and the audio fragments can be listened to again.

German lessons rely on the use of literature, films and other media. But which works are suitable for which context and for what purpose? Where can I find information on the literary canon and access films and various media? And what practical difficulties are there in selecting and using German-language works and media in Belgium? The ‘Week for German 2025’ is an ideal opportunity to discuss these questions – and to gain new ideas and knowledge.
In the first part of this online workshop, you will gain an overview of the current discussions on the necessary expansion of the literary and media canon. The focus will be on questions of its appeal to a changing student body and the competition from digital and social media.
In the second part, we will engage in a discussion: Which literary works, films and other media have you had good experiences with so far? Which works and media have proven difficult to access? What would a platform that makes canon and media knowledge available to German teachers in Belgium need to offer?
The workshop is primarily aimed at German teachers from Belgium, but is of course open to anyone interested in the use of the literary canon, films and other German-language media in Belgium.
If you would like to participate in this workshop, please register by Wednesday, 8 October 2025, 12:45 p.m., via the Deutschcafé website. On the day of the event, you will receive an email at 1 p.m. with the access data for Zoom online.
Registration via: Literary canon, films and other media in Belgian German lessons | Deutschcafé | University
Schedule: 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Since the end of May 2021, the new district office has been located in Harmoniepark. This is a great opportunity to learn more about the history of this neighbourhood, formerly known as the “German quarter”.
Although it was not the largest foreign community, the ‘German colony’ in Antwerp was undoubtedly the most visible around 1900.
It was from 1863 onwards, with the abolition of customs duties on the Scheldt, supported at international level, that the largest influx was recorded.
German families not only settled in Antwerp, but nowhere else was integration into Belgian life as strong as here.
The families integrated into cultural life, promoted sport through new infrastructure and were heavily involved in charitable work.
In Antwerp, a German could flourish in all areas of their own culture.
Wealthy merchants and entrepreneurs were the driving force behind this network.
This guided tour tells the story of these wealthy families who settled around the Harmony Park.
As part of German Language Week, this guided tour is accompanied by a German-speaking guide.
You can book online via this link.
As part of the Week for German, the Institute of German Language and Literature at Ghent University is organizing a German film evening. We will be screening “Zwei zu Eins” (2024) by Natja Brunckhorst.
The film “Zwei zu Eins” tells the story of Maren, Robert and Volker, who in the summer of 1990 discover millions of East German marks in an old shaft in Halberstadt. They develop a system to exchange this now worthless money for goods, in order to outwit the rising capitalist logic and secure their future. Inspired by true events, the film addresses themes of greed and solidarity during the transition from the GDR to the Federal Republic.
Schedule:
7:00 PM: Introduction
7:15 PM: Start of the film
9:15 PM: Discussion
As tradition has it, some snacks and drinks will be provided; feel free to bring along your own favorite treats. Everyone interested is warmly welcome – admission is free.

The DAAD office in Brussels is organizing, under the direction of Michael Hörig and as part of the Week for German, a workshop for German-language Spoken Word Poetry.
The workshop will take place at the DAAD premises in Brussels and will be led by the poetry slammer Paul Bank from Stolberg, who has already led Poetry Slams in Ghent and Liège in the past two years.
The German language is hard. Complex and accented. It is loud, emphatic, yet emotionless. You can never really “write beautifully” in German. You can never really “sound beautiful” in German. And yet there are words like “Sehnsucht” (longing), “Mondlicht” (moonlight), or “Augenblick” (moment). There are great German poets and authors. Yes, there is such a thing as “the beautiful German language.”
This workshop, designed as an “Introductory Course to Spoken Word,” is aimed at all students of German Studies interested in exploring the modern use of the German language. The focus lies on creative writing and especially on the contemporary literary format of “Spoken Word / Slam Poetry” – a blend of poetry, prose, and performance.
Participants will gain initial experience in writing and performing their own creative texts in a relaxed setting.
By the end of the workshop, all participants will leave with at least one original piece – and (hopefully) with a new appreciation for how beautiful, creative, sonorous, and poetic the German language can be.
On Wednesday, October 8, the German Department of the University of Namur will present the box-office success Honig im Kopf by Til Schweiger. The film tells, in a humorous yet moving way, the story of a grandfather suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and his granddaughter, while taking a gentle look at themes such as dementia, family, and memories.
The evening will open with an introduction by Prof. Dr. Jeroen Darquennes (University of Namur), who will offer a brief cultural reflection on the theme of aging.
The film will be shown in the original German version with English subtitles and will also mark the launch of the new “Cinéclub Germa”, which this year runs under the theme Life Lines.
For a cozy atmosphere, guests are welcome to bring along their own drinks and snacks.
This event is part of the “Woche für Deutsch” and is open to all. Admission is free. No registration required.
We look forward to seeing you there!

Speaker: Prof. Dr. Oliver Holz
How did you feel back then? Do you still remember? Or were you not even born yet?
In the reading session “Tracing the Fall of the Wall”, we take a look back at life in the GDR. Personal experiences and anecdotes are embedded in the context of social and educational policy.
Key historical events before and around 1989 will also be discussed.
11:30 – 13:00: Experiencing the GDR in the Classroom
Speaker: Anja Fricke
An increasing number of young people today express great trust in authoritarian regimes and strong leaders.
This practice-oriented session introduces participants to the methodology of a typical GDR lesson.
Every dictatorship is marked by certain recurring structures.
You’ll first receive a theoretical introduction to the GDR and insights into Anja’s experiences with guest teaching sessions on the topic.
Afterwards, we will discuss how to create a safe space in the classroom to address this topic in a thoughtful way.
What needs to be considered? What framework conditions are necessary?
There will also be an opportunity to try out short teaching sequences yourself.
Experience, from the perspective of a GDR teacher, how powerful and restrictive dictatorial structures could be.
Naturally, you’ll receive materials including an exemplary lesson plan and scenarios for typical GDR-style school tasks.

Little Emil has his bicycle stolen by a traveler wearing a bowler hat. Together with a gang of friends, he sets out to chase the crook, who turns out to be a dangerous bandit. Based on a screenplay by Billy Wilder, this is the most beautiful adaptation of this classic of German children’s literature.

Roland Klick’s first feature film is a critique of bourgeois postwar German society, offering a subtle approach to political criticism through feelings and emotions. It is free of the influences of the moderate or radical left that shaped the work of other young German filmmakers of the time, who approached political critique in the form of message-driven films or explicitly subversive and radical works. An essential film in articulating another idea of political critique in cinema.

This children’s theatre piece is a playful and dance-like performance around the boundless questions of young people. Two performers set out with energy to search for answers beyond languages, asking themselves: Do we need to know everything? Understand everything?
A hopeful and humorous performance that also dares to approach taboos.

In the music-theatre performance “SPLASH!”, everything revolves around water. Water as the source of life, which we associate with primal power, beauty, and fascination – but also with joy and fun. Yet, the careless use of this precious resource is also part of the story of water – a story inseparably linked to our own.
In “SPLASH!”, the performing musicians create different soundscapes and invite both children and adults to an interactive play with the personal and cultural memory of water.
SPLASH is a co-production of Theater Marabu, the Beethovenfest Bonn and the Ruhrfestspiele Recklinghausen, in cooperation with the University of Music and Dance Cologne and the Ruhr University Bochum.
It is funded by the program Jupiter – Performing Arts for Young Audiences of the German Federal Cultural Foundation, and supported by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media.

Note: After the performance, young visitors are invited to take part in a one-hour workshop for active exchange.
A speechless late-night host, an annoyed interpreter, a lightning-fast live illustrator – and you in the audience. The star of the evening: the German language. But it keeps everyone waiting. So the show team and the audience must figure out together what kind of personality German really has. Between games, interviews and hidden-picture action, a turbulent evening unfolds – full of misunderstandings, monstrous words and surprising insights.
A show that breaks down language barriers – funny, interactive, international. A show with (linguistic) class.

Together with Les Grignoux, we are presenting Christian Petzold’s new film Miroirs No. 3, which had its world premiere this year in the “Quinzaine des Cinéastes” section at the Cannes Film Festival, where it was met with great enthusiasm.
Christian Petzold is regarded as one of the most prominent auteur filmmakers of our time and is considered a co-founder of the so-called Berlin School. His work consistently explores themes such as identity, loss, memory, love, and death, and is characterized by a realistic yet strikingly stylized cinematic language.
Following his acclaimed reinterpretation of the myth of Undine (Undine, 2020) and the multiple award-winning relationship drama Afire (Roter Himmel, 2023), Petzold returns in Miroirs No. 3 to the theme of the loss of a child—a subject he has already explored with unsettling precision in Wolfsburg (2003) and Ghosts (Gespenster, 2005).
Les Grignoux and the press write about it:

As part of the Week of German, the Friedrich Naumann Foundation presents the film Die Ermittlung, based on the play of the same name by Peter Weiss. The feature film sheds light on the Frankfurt Auschwitz Trials (1963–1965) and powerfully brings to life witness testimonies and historical facts. Like the stage play, the film highlights two central issues in how the crimes of the National Socialists in Auschwitz and other concentration and extermination camps were addressed at the time.
This year, we are especially delighted that actor Tristan Seith will be joining us as our guest. To ensure enough time for the subsequent discussion with him, we will not screen the complete version of the film, but instead present a selection of approximately two hours. After the screening, Tristan Seith will engage with us in a conversation about his artistic approach to the play and share valuable insights. This gives the event an additional dimension, opening space for dialogue and reflection.
The release of the film was supported by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation as part of its thematic focus on “Liberal Democracy and Open Society.”
Refreshments will be provided – a selection of snacks will be available.

The duo “Adrenaline & Placebo” pairs upbeat feel-good music with subtle linguistic humor in sparkling cabaret numbers to help unwind tension. At the Goethe-Institut Brussels, the passionate musician and the singer-songwriter present a show featuring two voices, accordion, and guitar/banjo. For one evening, they take the audience on a train journey with “Deutsche Wahn AG.”
In their toolkit are witty pieces like “I Can’t Do Small Talk,” “Language Junkie,” and “Winged Wordsmith.” More quirky characters push their way into the limelight: a favorite neighbor with “Helper Star Syndrome,” the “Homo Sapiens First Class,” a lady in “Handbag Frenzy,” and tourists fruitlessly searching for the last true locals. The satire culminates in the scandal-tainted “Black Cherry Cream Cake” bearing an official seal.
Since April 2025, Belgian-based musician and Germanist Constanze Schwarzer and translator-teacher-author BanJoe Combüchen have been touring with their refreshing cabaret show Made in Belgium. The German cabaret artists have irrevocably devoted themselves to their multilingual host country Belgium.

The Week for German will be officially opened on Monday, 6 October 2025, under the sign of humour by the German piano cabaret artist Anne Folger. Songs on the piano, stories, music, no tap dancing. Anne Folger performs piano cabaret with a clear backdrop, profound, eloquent humour and great, deep music. Her motto: No matter the stage where life takes place, it wants to be played. Her joie de vivre starts where bad mood feels most comfortable and she consistently separates herself from it. Whether it’s about an idiot test, frustration on a dating site or a hotel room fiasco: there’s always a punchline hidden somewhere and she always saves it! Anyone who has ever seen the award-winning entertainer with her keen powers of observation live on stage knows that her evenings are always a varied mix of cabaret, stories, her own songs, stand-up comedy and great compositions. Lightning clever, charming, cheeky and profound. With her having art in the heart, music fire in the belly, a real teaser’s mischievous and sharp tongue, this evening will be one thing for sure: playfully promising! Speech is golden– Active Speaking Support in the DaF Classroom
How can we encourage our learners simply to start speaking — without fear, without striving for perfection, but with enjoyment and real language progress?
This training day is packed with fresh ideas for breaking down speaking inhibitions and motivating learners to use the language actively.
After an inspiring introduction, we move straight into practice: in several workshops we test and develop practical methods that can be used immediately in class — creative, interactive, and with plenty of room for experimentation.
For anyone who wants to give the speaking component in their lessons a real boost.

Dear DaF Teacher,
For the fifth time, the Belgian Association of Germanists and German Teachers (BGDV), in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut and the German Embassy, is hosting an online German quiz.
In this event, two or more DaF classes from various Belgian secondary schools compete against each other. The quiz is part of the nationwide “Week for German” (October 6–12, 2025) and takes place Monday through Friday during regular school hours. Of course, your class should join in!
The online quiz covers German in the broadest sense. It runs on Kahoot and lasts approximately 20 minutes. There are 20 multiple-choice questions on vocabulary, grammar, typical expressions, cultural knowledge, everyday language, etc., at levels A1, A2, and B1—so it’s suitable for beginners as well as more advanced learners. Above all, it’s meant to be fun!
Will your DaF class come out on top? Sign them up! You’ll find the registration form on the BGDV website (bgdv.be). You’ll provide the essential information we need to place your class (A1, A2, or B1), determine their playing time (between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.), and match them against classes of similar level.
After the Week for German, the two strongest classes at each level (A1, A2, and B1) will be invited to Brussels for a live grand finale at the German Embassy on a Wednesday afternoon in early 2026.
There are great prizes! Every year, the competition is thrilling as learners and their teachers give it their all and inspire the audience with their enthusiasm.
So don’t hesitate—register your DaF classes now! Please note that each participating class needs its own registration form. It will be a fantastic experience for your students!

Nebensache – secondary matter
A theatre play – for all, ages 6 and up
A Secondary matter. A commonplace story. A story without headline.
Every night, Cornelius sleeps in a different place. Today he wakes up in a corner of a room. It could perhaps be a class room. He is just passing through. He is always on a journey. He is roaming the land, as he has no home made of stone or wood or concrete or ice. His home is the being-on-the-move and the people he encounters.
He possesses nothing, except for a miserable pram. That was not always the case. But now, he stores his few poor possessions and his story in this pram. It is this story that he tells every one who wants to hear it. It is a story about luck and about what you need to be happy. About possession and loss. About debts and guilt. About farmers and banks. About hopelessness and the courage to make a fresh start.
After he has told his story, he hits the road again. Tomorrow, Cornelius will wake up in another room. Maybe it is a theatre.
Nebensache is a production of the AGORA Theatre (Sankt Vith, Belgium) based on the play Nebensache by Jakob Mendel & Gitte Kath, translated by Volker Quandt (1994) and published by Harlekin Theaterverlag (Tübingen). The play is directed by Kurt Pothen and performed by Roland Schumacher.

In her poetry and prose as well as in her theatre plays, libretti and radio plays, the Vienna-based freelance writer Margret Kreidl weaves richly associative tapestries of sound, reactivating a variety of lyrical forms and traditions. Memories and dreams, references to texts from world literature and iconic works of art are interwoven with trivial elements such as headlines and weather reports in a playful way that leaves room for further thoughts and allusions.
Kreidl writes radio plays (e.g. ‘Eine Schwalbe falten’, composition: António Breitenfeld Sá Dantas, ORF 2017) and performances (e.g. ‘EINLEUCHTEND WEISS’, compositions by Sanziana Dobrovicescu, Clemens Nachtmann and Antonis Rouvelas, KULTUM, Graz 2021). She has also published numerous books, including Ich bin eine Königin. Performances, Wieser Verlag 1996; In allen Einzelheiten. Catalogue, Ritter Verlag 1998; Hier schläft das Tier mit Zöpfen. Gedichte mit Fußnoten, Berger Verlag 2018. In the Edition Korrespondenzen: Laute Paare. Szenen Bilder Listen, 2002; Mitten ins Herz, 2005; Eine Schwalbe falten, 2009; Einfache Erklärung. Alphabet der Träume, 2014; Zitat, Zikade. Zu den Sätzen, 2017; Schlüssel zum Offenen. Gedichte, 2021; Mehr Frauen als Antworten. Gedichte mit Fußnoten, 2023. The volume Wien, Schwedenplatz polyphon, arranged by her together with Lucas Cejpek, has just been published by Sonderzahl-Verlag. She has been teaching aesthetics and creative writing at the Max Reinhardt Seminar since 2015.
