If you want to learn about life in the former GDR not only through history books, but also in a vivid and emotionally engaging way, do not miss Christian Petzold’s thrilling, multi-award-winning drama Barbara (2012).

As part of the Week for German 2026, we warmly invite you to discover this masterfully crafted, suspenseful and visually striking film. It tells the story of an East Berlin doctor who is transferred to the Baltic coast as punishment after applying for an exit visa. By focusing on individual lives rather than simply on the state apparatus, the film creates a warm and deeply moving portrait that goes straight to the heart, while its open ending leaves plenty of room for speculation.

The screening will begin with short presentations by our German Studies students, offering an insight into everyday life in the GDR. At the heart of these presentations is the question of how administrative and political borders shape very specific lifeworlds and emotional spaces. In this way, the evening ties in seamlessly with the theme “Mapping Worlds”, this year’s guiding theme of the Department de langues et littératures germaniques. Following the film, the reception will provide ample opportunity to further explore this theme.
