A widespread prejudice holds that German is an unmelodious, even unattractive language. In reality, however, the German language has a remarkable capacity for beauty. Linguist Prof. Dr Roland Kaehlbrandt demonstrates this in his SPIEGEL bestseller, “Von der Schönheit der deutschen Sprache. Eine Wiederentdeckung” (published by Piper), using beautiful words, sentences, passages, verses, songs and dialects. Much of this, however, has faded from memory. It is time for a joyful rediscovery. “Kaehlbrandt writes as a learned enthusiast who combines academic depth with the lightness of an essayist.” (General-Anzeiger)
Prof. Dr Roland Kaehlbrandt teaches linguistics at Alanus University of Arts and Social Sciences. He studied Romance and Germanic philology in Cologne and Paris and obtained his doctorate in Romance linguistics. Through his work with various foundations, he launched the nationwide “Jugend debattiert” competition and the “Deutschsommer” programme for children from migrant backgrounds. He is a member of the German Academy for Language and Literature. He has received numerous German and French awards for his commitment to promoting language awareness and linguistic culture.
